Guardrails
Check every message before the model sees it. A chat gateway can block prompt injection, mask or block personal data, and keep to the topics you allow. The checks run on Perplexity's Decider v1.2, one decision call per new message, and are free for now.
The three checks
Each check is a question the decision model answers about every message of the request, with a probability. A check hits when that probability is at or above its threshold (0 to 1) for any message. For topics it hits when a message is about a blocked one, or, when you list allowed topics, a user message is about none of them (a system prompt or a tool result need not be about an allowed topic).
- Prompt injection
prompt_injectionDoes the text try to override, ignore or reveal the assistant's instructions, or make it act outside its role?Actions: flag, block. Default: block at 0.9. - Personal data
piiDoes the text contain personal data about a person? And which kind, among the types you pick: email, phone, card, iban, government_id, address, name.Actions: flag, block, redact. Default: redact at 0.5, all seven types. - Topics
topicsWhich of your allowed and blocked topics is the text about, or none of them (other)?Actions: flag, block. Default: 0.5; you list the topics.
What is checked: every message, whatever its role: the system prompt, every user turn, earlier answers (their text and tool call arguments) and tool results, each whole. A message over 8,000 characters is read in overlapping parts. Images, audio and files are not read. It works the same on /v1/chat/completions, /v1/messages and /v1/responses through a gateway. Decision calls (/v1/systemone) and decision gateways are never checked: they are the check.
Actions
block: the request is refused with HTTP 446 and the reason. It is never sent to the model and never billed.
flag: the request is answered as usual. The response says so in its headers, and Usage › Requests marks the request.
redact (personal data only): emails, phone numbers, card numbers (Luhn-checked) and IBANs (checksum-validated) become [email], [phone], [card] and [iban] in every message before the call (earlier turns and tool results too) and whatever the score, and the check runs on what is left. The system prompt is yours: it goes as written, and personal data in it (a support address, say) never trips the check. A name, an address or an ID number cannot be masked by a pattern: a message with personal data and nothing to mask is flagged instead (pii:flag). Block stops them. With types empty the check only asks whether there is personal data, and masks nothing.
Turn them on
In the console: switch them on under API keys › Guardrails, for all keys or one key, or fine-tune one on its gateway page in the advanced gateway settings. A preset under Gateway › Playground › Guardrails runs them on sample messages, where each sample message sets off one check, and have your agent create it from the prompt there. The Rules page lists them, and Try it on a gateway's page shows what they did to a message.
A key with a gateway of its own always runs through it, and so does every key under an account default gateway with guardrails: a request whose x-klinn-gateway header names another gateway is refused with a 403 gateway_locked, so a header cannot step around the checks.
In code: guardrails are a field of the gateway config, saved with the Management API or MCP. model may be left out for Decider v1.2; checks holds 0 to 3, at most one of each, and a check left out is off. action is required. Topics are short labels (up to 20 a list, 40 characters each), and at least one list has one; other is taken. A bad field is a 400 that names it.

Every response through a gateway with checks carries two headers, on a 200 and on a 446 alike:
x-klinn-guardrail:pass,flag,redact,blockorunchecked.x-klinn-guardrail-checks: each check's score, rounded to 2 decimals, and the topic picked:prompt_injection=0.91;pii=0.02;topic=billing:0.88. A topic with non-ASCII characters or; = : %in it is percent-encoded.
When several things happen, the header says the strongest: block, then unchecked, redact, flag and pass.
A blocked request, end to end:

{ "error": { "type": "guardrail_blocked", "code": "prompt_injection",
"message": "Blocked by the prompt_injection guardrail of gateway support-bot (score 0.97)." } }The body is the OpenAI error shape on chat completions. /v1/messages answers in Anthropic's shape (type: "error", the same error.type and error.code), and /v1/responses in the Responses shape (with param: null). The message names the gateway and the score. Handle it like any refusal:

raiseFail-open, timing and price
Too long to check. If the checks take longer than 2.5 seconds (2.5 seconds for each 16 new messages, at most 10), or a request brings more than 128 new messages or parts (about a million characters), a gateway with any block check refuses it with 446 and a message to send it again: the answers that come late are kept, so the same request sent a few seconds later is checked whole. A gateway that only flags or redacts answers it, marked x-klinn-guardrail: unchecked.
Fail-open. If the decision model errs, the request is answered without the checks and marked x-klinn-guardrail: unchecked, unless a message already blocked it; Logs shows the flag guardrail_unchecked.
Timing. The checks run before the call, so a request with checks takes about 0.4 to 1 second longer. New messages are checked at the same time, and a message checked before within the hour reuses its answer: an agent resending its history waits only for its new messages.
Price. Checks are free for now: no usage of their own and nothing added to the request's price. A blocked request is not billed at all.
In Usage › Requests
Each request records what the checks did as <check>:<outcome> flags, such as prompt_injection:block, pii:redact or topics:flag, and guardrail_unchecked on fail-open. The Flagged filter shows them, the request drawer reads them out in words, and a blocked request is a refused row with the error code guardrail_blocked. Each guardrail's card on the gateway page counts what it caught and blocked over 24 hours or 7 days.
model, or Advanced on the gateway page), but may need other thresholds: try them with Try it on the gateway's page first, or start with flag and read Usage › Requests before you switch to block.
